Day 93: Into the Mountains

The party teleports back to Red Valley hold, gathers up 30 soldiers from Njal, and heads off towards the Wall separating the dwarvern valley from the rest of Beranok. Cathal w/ some magical assistance scouts the fortifications, finding many undead guarding it but also locating the Mecahnisms needed to drop the bridge and allow their allies to enter. He reports back to Teneb and Balthazar, then they all sneak in and try to drop the bridge. While they are doing so they get attacked by ghouls who can scent out their location and Spectres attacking from the floor and walls. While dealing with these and also dozens of skeleton’s they are attacked by blasts of cold magic from an unknown source. They eventually reveal the unknown caster to be a vampire with cold magic, but despite injuring her greatly she gets away after creating a massive blizzard in the hallways. The party finishes off the rest of the undead, upon the bridge, and are joined by their allies. They then rest for the night to recover from their ordeal and await Luscian to rejoin them before venturing further.

Day 90-92: Demons and Preperations
Day 90-92: Demons and Preperations

After their victory and resolution in the north the party traveled to meet their dwarvern and barbarian allies who were besieging the remnants of the Devil tribe. They had conquered the first 3 levels of the tribes mountain home, but had been unable to take over the temple complex at the top.
The party prepared themselves against death magic, elements, and buffed themselves considerably. Despite several spells of light the temple was nearly black, and the party could only see about 20 ft in any direction. They encountered a powerful set of magic pillars, which cast powerful death magics upon anyone walking between them. Cathal tried to disable it but found no way to do so. They party crossed one by one, each taking some damage and few being temporarily stunned but shrugging off the most insidious of the pillars effects. The party continued inside but were ambushed by many clerics and other worshipers of Tegura. Oberyns wind spells kept most of the physical projectiles from harming the party, but Clerics flung ray spells charged with horrible debilitating effects. The party managed to injure and slay a few of their foes, but after being sickened/shaken/chaos cursed/blinded/ and at last feared the party was driven back. Cathal and Teneb both dropped their might weapons, although Luscian was able to grab the bow before teleporting out. On his way out Cathal discovered that enemies were hiding behind illusionary walls from which they were casting spells and channeling dark magic. After fleeing to their allies outside, Luscian spent several minutes blindly shooting fireballs into the temple and was rewarded with a few screams as he killed off a few of the enemies inside before they could take cover.

The party decided to take a day to recover and prepare different magic before going in again. Later that evening Luscian took off with not notice after frantically looking around for a few seconds.

The next morning Oberyn and Cathal, fully prepared based on their knowledge of the last encounter re-entered the temple. Oberyn cast daylight to dispelling the darkness inside the temple, stoneshape to tunnel around the pillars, and sunburst blasting everyone inside. Cathal stayed invisible and prepared to sneak attack the biggest threat. They approached the alter to Tegura where they saw a familiar face, Lady Viera, Duke Darrell’s consort. Cathal also realizes she was masquerading as the merchant they encountered on the road to Red Valley hold a few short months ago when they were attacked by the Nalphashne. Lady Viera is sitting on a corner of the alter, holding Ravager in one hand with its edge to the throat of a cleric of Tegura. The cleric is mostly naked, shackled backwards over the alter, and looks to have been tortured. Viera sighs and expresses her disappointment over the poor showing, saying “their was one of you that I really wanted to see today”. Suddenly Cathal shoots her with Equilizer, 2 arrows striking her vitals. Veira screams and slits the clerics throat with ravager and then points at Cathal and casts a spell. His mind is clouded and he begins to attack Oberyn, who is forced to dispell the insidious dominate spell controlling his ally. Cathal fires arrows, switching targets as he is dominated again, then back as he is set free with another dispel. Overyn summons dinosaurs to aid him in battle, has his dire tiger charge Vierra, and continues to dispel her enchantments. Viera protects herself with several mirror images, and strikes back at the party with powerful enchantments. Where the clerics heart blood hits the ground, a red glowing circle erupts. As more blood hits the ground, it grows larger and larger, and soon a great demonic shape can be seen traveling through this Gate to the abyss. At this point Teneb comes charging in along with his henchmen Tanthul. Viera tells him to pick sides, and when he attacks her shrieks and blasts him with two powerful effects. While Teneb reels from the first, he resists the dominate person thrown afterwards and taunts her weak magic. Then a great and powerful Balor, a lord of the Abyss, steps through the portal and begins to attack the party. Teneb takes it on head on, and trades several savage blows with the demon. The Balor grapples Cathal with magical force, and eventually throws the unholly Alter at the party with telekinetic force. Cathal continues to shoot arrows at first Viera, and then once Oberyn dispels the magics keeping her on the plane, and then shoots more at the Balor. After suffering dozens of blows, including a critical strike from a summoned T-rex, the Balor teleports away after both complementing and threatening the party.

The party explores the temple to find that it has been deserted, but manage to find a few valuables that were not taken when its residents fled. The Dwarves and the Bear tribe warriors along with Mav’ka and Brogar pack up and begin heading back to the entrance to the dwarvern tunnels to join in the defense against Saa’rid and his undead army. At this point Luscian teleports back with a new ally, the powerful She’sua sorcerer Balthazar, and a sad story about a sudden attack upon his clan and the slaughter of many of his extended family. Balthazar and Luscian bring with them several members of the Covaris Clan, who are told they may occupy the now barren Devil Tribe town if they promise to sanctify and hallow the temple. Oberyn decides his work in the north is now over, and he retreats back to the forests of northern Beranok after bidding the party farewell.

With the help of Balthazar and Luscian, the two of them, Teneb, Cathal, and Tanthul all travel first to Red Valley hold where they make plans to attack the undead and also share news with Njal who promises them reinforcements for their assault. Next the party travels to Sestrus, with Cathal staying invisible and Luscian disguising himself upon realization that there are large bounties on their heads from both the new Archduke of Fleid as well as the Renostrii. Teneb and Tanthul leave to attend their own business. Balthazar visits Ilrania in the royal palace, where he, Luscian, and Cathal all speak to both Ilrania and King Marius. They reveal some of what they have been doing and are given some information in return. After this they set out to sell some of the loot they had accumulated in the last few weeks. They sell a +5 undead bane dagger to Ilrania for 24k + commission, and ~16k of other loot around town. Cathal has Balthazar pick up and pay for his sniper goggles. Most of the way through the trip Luscian is recognized by a beggar, who tries to extort money out of him. Cathal scares him off but Luscian stats getting a panic attack, and pulls the party off the road. He tries to convince them that they need to leave now. While they are discussing it, several vials are flung at the party from a nearby roof. The first explodes in an incendiary cloud, the next in a stinking cloud, and the next 5 in exploding blasts for force that knock down Luscian. The last of the vials also traps the party in a spherical cone of force, only broken when it touches the surrounding buildings. The stinking cloud nauseates the entire group and after a little bit of panic they dive through windows, and break into houses to get away from the stinking cloud. The party tries to make their way through buildings to safety but they keep being cut off by more stinking clouds and spheres of force. Without their ability to cast spells, Luscian and Balthazar are mostly helpless and follow Cathal as he dives out of windows and through others. After several rounds of running and few successful saves, Cathal manages to get ahead of the bomber and out of blast range where he goes invisible. The next round Luscian finally overcomes the Nausea and teleports both himself and Balthazar back to the royal palace. Cathal tries to follow their assailant but eventually losses the invisible flying bomber somewhere in the docks district. He then makes his way back to the party, and after getting healed in the temple of Lian’dra they teleport to Balthazar magical academy in She’sua. After a much needed nights sleep the party plans their next move over breakfast.

Day 87-89: The Resolution in the North
Day 87-89: The Resolution in the North

The party and their allies hunkered down in the ruins of the wolf tribe town and prepared to defend against the remaining armies of the Boar and Dragon tribes plus their Giant allies and Dragon Riders.
*they prepared to cast wall of fire and earth to mud in front of the wall to help the battle, each positioned themselves leading or accompanying an army to help against the leaders of the other side, sent the frost and hill giants to the north + used 2 scrolls of sending to let them communicate with their tribesmen in the Boar army and plan to unify and attack the Boar, and made plans to join up after a few exchanges of the army and attack the leaders. Teneb also raised the Ancient Red Dragon as a bloody skeleton and had it lay in wait to attack.

The shifters laid in wait and fired upon the incoming Barbarians, mostly targeting the Lizard riders, then retreated back towards the town. Most of the Barbarians charged after but when they got close the earth to mud and wall of fire combined with dirty tricks and false retreat to allow the shifters and wolfriders to completely wipe out the lizard riders and damage many others. The tattooed tribe defended the wall, the giants flung boulders from range in the north supported by the dragon skeleton, and the wolf riders engaged the fire giants in hit and run tactics in the south. The shifters held in the middle shifting fire to whoever needed help.

The Boar tribe attacked the skeleton dragon and the traitorous giants, the Dragon tribe army attacked the shifters and the wall using catapults to destroy it, the Dragon riders hit the shifters and tattooed tribe but for very little, and the fire giants and the wolf riders traded ineffective blows.

The party then grouped up and attacked the dragon riders, which their armies were having trouble damaging. Teneb cast fly from a scroll, Oberyn became an air elemental, and Cathal and Luscian hopped up on him and off they flew. Luscian cast a few spells including communal fire resistance on the party and greater invisibility and heroism on Cathal, who then proceeded to sneak attack to his hearts content as they chassed around the dragon riders. Teneb and Cathal brought down 2 of the three dragons, dropping one rider to the ground and forcing the Dragon Chieftain to fly using his own slower speed. Teneb traded a few blows with the chieftain and got the worse of the deal. Cathal shot his a few times and Lucian hit him with magic missile twice. But he managed to get a full attack in and scoring 1 hit and one crit upon Cathal, killed the noble archer and his body fell crashing to the ground. He also hit both Oberyn and Luscian very hard, stunning Luscian. As Teneb rejoined the battle to cover their retreat – both sides backed off to recover and lead one more round of army combat.

The skeleton was destroyed, but will rise again in an hour. The giants w/ Teneb and his Barbarian cohort managed to damage the Boar army enough that it retreated. The wolf riders under Mav’ka and Brogar routed the Fire Giant army, but were forced back from the two leaders who were able to fall back safely. The shifters and Tattooed barbarians did heavy damage to the Dragon tribe army, and its Cheiftain finally called for a retreat.

The Two armies backed off to lick their wounds – and this gave the party some time to think and recover. Many charges of cure light wounds wands were expended this day!! Having no way to raise dead handy, Mav’ka used reincarnate on Cathal, who while initially unwilling to return eventually was convinced. However his body was changed to that of a shifter, altering his ability scores and other features. Lukcily his bow Equalizer still was attuned to him.

With most resources expends and no more tricks up their sleeve to better the odds – the party approached the enemy army in an attempt to negotiate peace. The two enemy Chieftains and both Fire Giant leaders agreed to negotiate terms, but mandated it be concluded quickly. They knew if the party and its allies were able to rest for the night they would be likely be overwhelmed the next day, so their largest bargaining chip was the offer to avoid a mutual slaughter that day. Both sides began to negotiate in good faith.

The Frost and Hill giant leaders (Big Zwik and Grog Humanthrower) wanted to reaffirm their ownership of the Boar tribes territory and spoils of war.

The Wolf/Serpent Tribe leaders wanted lasting peace and restitution from the Dragon Tribe.

The Shifters( Kr’al, Sha’ra)(Ra’lo died to the Ancient Red Dragon) wanted whatever Cathal told them to, which were the spoils of war.

The Tattooed Tribe under their new cheiftain Garog Skullbasher (Mord died to the Dragon Cheiftain) wanted the spoils of war.

The Boar tribe Chieftain wanted his remaining soldiers to leave alive and free, and also to get back their villagers who had been taken as slaves by the Bear/Tattoo/Giants.

The Dragon tribe Chieftain wanted his remaining soldiers to leave alive and free, and to have a guarantee that no vengeance would be carried out against his tribe.

The party wanted All, then most, then some of the Red Dragons Horde. (as they were talked down by the prospect of fighting the 4 remaining leaders RIGHT NOW).

The Party managed to come up with, and then Teneb managed to bargain for the following:

*Each faction (party, giants, shifters, wolf, tatoo) each were to recieve any two items from the Dragons horde along with 10,000 gp of coins/gems/goods as desired.

Party: +5 undead bane Starknife, 4.5k diamond, 10,000gp (I’d suggest in diamonds)

Wolf Tribe: +5 ki focus warhammer, 4k ruby, 10,000gp in goods // Also all spoils returned to them by Boar/Dragon

Shifters: HumanBane Oathbow, 4k Silver animal Statue, 10,000gp in items of beauty

Tatoo Tribe: +6 belt con (went to Dunar Rockskin), +1 dragonhide plate, 10,000gp in equipment

Giants: 1 powerful arcane and 1 powerful divine scroll, 10,000gp in scrolls and gems, everyone agrees to their ownership of the previously Boar tribe lands.

*Boar tribe joins with the Dragon Tribe, agrees to offer a 200 mercenary army led by the cheiftain to help the party, which will pay 2100gp a week (can be value of returned people), in addition they recieve all their children back and 25% of their captive adult population. Additional can be purchased back for 100-500gp value each on a case by case basis.

*Dragon tribe agrees to lasting peace with all involved parties which the Chieftain swears in front everyone, they agree to pay the restitution’s/spoils to the other groups, they agree to have trade and communication with the other groups.

Next two days***
-Everyone gets to rest that night (now day 88). The Boar and Dragon Armies head home, sans the 200 mercenaries who stay. Luscian teleports a few people to the Dragon tribe to collect their restitution w/ the Dragon Chieftain. Oberyn leaves to commune with Liandra in the hope of receiving a new animal companion. The shifter army begain traveling both with magic and more mundane means back to the south to join up with Reinn’s army. The Tattoo and Boar tribe armies march down to join up with the Bear/Dwarvern armies besieging the devil tribe. The giant armies return to their territory.

The party decides after some advice to include the Horse tribe on their peace talks/agreement as they are now the strongest remaining tribe in the north. Teneb and Luscian help work out an agreement with the other tribes/groups of the previous peace that includes the Dragons and Wolf and giant ceding some territory to the horse tribe, in exchange for peace. In addition the Horse tribe agree to enforce peace between the other groups and also to hold a place of trade and discussion once a month where all groups can meet in safety. They plan to include the Bear/Jaguar/Dwarves + any other tribes in the area as well.

Armies of Lerwein led by Drasko and Darrell have conquered Mardis, killing Arch-Duke Edwin Mardinis and defeating Archmage Gerard Helyas. They attacked the capital by surprise, taking palace and killing most of the leadership. They also captured the Magical Academy, killing ~45, but dominating or coercing most of the rest of the adult students to join their side. The Earls and Barons of Mardis either joined them or fell one by one.

An army of 500 along with 1000 mercenaries also secured Reslin in the North-East, killing the 500 troops there loyal to the Arch-Duke.

At the same time the Duke of Halych, Nicholas Mayre, and the Duke of Iraklion, Renard Gryfford were manipulated into fighting each other by magic and traitorous retainers. As the two armies met on the field, those loyal to the two dukes were abandoned by many traitorous Earls and Barons. The traitors then surrounded the two Ducal armies who were then mostly annihilated by lightning eruptions caused by 50 dancing Vrocks. The survivors were then hunted down, and two Earls were crowned. Earl Jonas Hammond became the Duke of Halych, and Earl guy Cobham became the new Duke of Iraklion. Both have sworn fealty to the new Arch-Duke of Lerwein, Darrell Lerweinis.
-5250 soldiers killed, 5500 new soldiers sworn to the new Dukes and the New Arch-Duke. Another ~2000 Mercenaries hired to enforce the new order and reinforce the borders.

Avis Defended Two-Rivers against Reinn. After two days of brutal combat, Avis retreated to Sky-Tower Hold putting Two rivers and ~10 smaller holds to the torch on the way.

-Under the leadership of Saa’rid the undead army has finally broken through the two Inner gates of the Dwarves and have made it into the upper tunnels. Skirmishes are constant as the undead push farther and farther in and the Dwarves struggle to defend against vastly superior numbers and the powerful undead leaders.
-Undead: ~1000 6HD skeletons losses/1000 remaining, 5 Devourer dead/ 10 remaining, 200 ghouls lost/ 100 remaining

Barbarian War in the North:

Bear Tribe and Dwarvern Army:
-minimal losses taking 2 small devil tribe villages, some women and children kept alive, most Devil tribe members killed as they resisted. Main Devil tribe village is under siege, the outer area has been conquered by the Dwarves cannot take the inner area. Both attempts to penetrate have been disastrous and the attackers met with Devil/Demon and heavy magic. The Dwarves are now content to fortify and pen in the remaining Devil Tribe.

Day 86-87: The Clash of Dragons
Day 86-87: The Clash of Dragons

After gathering their now formidable army of allies the party at last sets off to aid of the Wolf and Serpent Tribes. Their barbarian, giant, and shifter allies follow the party who set off at a breakneck pace riding Oberyn shape shifted into an Air elemental. They fly quickly but low near the treeline and manage to remain hidden from the Dragon Tribe dragon patrols. But they have the misfortune of travelling through the hunting grounds of a Ravenous Bandersnatch. Having seen dragons flying around overhead, the enormous feline has been stalking from tree to tree trying to jump up and grab anything flying too close to the tops. As oberyn flys by it leaps up and pounces upon him, dragging the entire party down to the ground with a thud. Luscian manages to feather fall down, but the rest of the party hits hard. Teneb immediatly engages it, provoking most of its attacks. Cathal and Oberyn are hit, but quickly get out of range. After a frantic first round of combat the party manages to quickly shoot, claw, bite, savage, slice, slash, gash, blast, hit, and main the bandersnatch to death despite its formidable defenses and fast healing. The party left the beast hidden as best they could to come collect the body/pelt later when they had time and continued on to towards the wall leading into the wolf tribe valley.

The party arrived at the wall to find it ruined; the gates broken down and the parapets scorched by dragon fire. As they explore the area they are ambushed by a scouting party of the Dragon Tribe. Cathal gives split second notice to the others and a fierce battle begins. Several frost and stone giants, along with 2 larger red and black colored ones, move towards the fighting. Teneb tries to negotiate with them, but his attempt is ruined by Luscian fireballing a group of giants. Teneb takes on half a dozen giants, including one of the huge ones himself, deflecting their thrown rocks and javelins. The huge female giant casts a powerful fire spell upon the party, but thanks to Luscian’s resist energy communal is is ineffective. Oberyn and his Feline companion tear through the ranks of the Barbarians, as Cathal snipes the leaders and spellcasters while invisible and hasted. When most of the dragon tribe and giants have been slain, the two Huge ones teleport away nursing grave wounds from Teneb’s sword, Cathal’s arrows, and Luscian’s cold spells. No sooner had that fight ended then several spells began to rain down upon the party, and then two red dragons with riders appear spewing out breathe weapons while their riders attack. After getting the worse of the exchange the two dragons soar away, casting invisibility and buffing themselves. They then return for another exchange of attacks, and after getting the worse of that exchange as well they flee. Teneb charms a remaining giant to tell a modified version of events when their allied giant army shows up. The party then waits for their allies who eventually arrive, as do a small contingent of Wolf Tribe combatants led by Brogar Dragonshaper and Mav’ka – the master of many forms.

When the allies arrive, the allies are patched up and they hold a war council and decide to move swiftly to attack the smaller Dragon Tribe army in the east. They march all night, resting briefly in the morning to regain spells, then attack the army. The party takes to the front lines, fighting the dragons and Fire giants (the new huge type of giant). After a fierce battle lasting hours the allied armies win, but took devastating losses in particular against the several dragon riders in the enemy army. With more than half their army dead or badly injured the party retook a nearby wolf tribe village and began triage and resting their troops.

Later in the day after some recovery, the Party had the idea to scry upon the dragon rider they had seen the day before. They do, and are rewarded by seeing a meeting between several dragon riders, the dragon tribe chieftain, and the Ancient Red Dragon who governs the tribe. Within moments of this, the ancient red dragon looked up and gave a nasty laugh and breathed her breathe weapon, destroying the skying spell. Soon thereafter a scrying spell appears above the party. The party assumes it’s the red dragon and then made the grave mistake of taunting the red dragon. Using magic Cathal and Luscian say that her dead mate (slain during the defeat of the barbarian horde) was both weak, delicious, and makes great armor. A few minutes later as the party continues to make plans, a female wolf tribe soldier walks up to them to and starts to talk. She thanks them for help and asks their plans. After some banter and discussion, and a detect magic spell cast by Luscian, the soldier walks up to Cathal and complements him on his armor. Cathal makes a witty response, to which the solider laughs, then then grabs him with one hand and hurles him against the wall of a nearby building. Teneb makes an attack against the soldier, but his critical strike barely manages to make a cut in the soldiers skin. The soldier then lets out a roar and turns into the Ancient Red Dragon. It attacks most of the party, hitting them so hard they are dazed. Only Teneb manages to keep from being dazed, and casts mirror image on himself. Oberyn casts summon natures ally and brings two Trex’s and a fire elemental into the fray. Luscian tries to cast greater dispel magic at the dragon, but it rebound upon him instead. The dragon back up and unleashes its massively powerful breathe weapon upon the party and the surrounding area. Many buildings are set on fire, and dozens of allied troops are melted, Oberyns animal companion is killed. LuscianIt then takes to the air and circles around for another pass. Mavka turns into a white dragon, Brogar hops on her back and they pursue. Teneb casts fly from a scoll and follows. Cathal takes many shots at the Dragon, but few find their mark. Luscian lets off spell after spell, but doesn’t manage to penetrate the dragons many defenses. After several rounds of trading blows and spells, the Dragon flys off at full speed wounded. The party uses this time to heal and buff up. But so does the dragon, and it soon returns. Cathal shouts a warning , oberyn hits it with fairy fire, teneb charges and hits it, Luscian casts a fire Icy prison which rebounds upon him. The dragon uses its breathe weapon again, through the party’s resist fire prevents much of the damage. Cathal is very badly injured and hides in a burning building, Luscian is knocked unconscous and later healed by Oberyn. The dragon is eventually hit by a dazing persistant fireball that penetrates its SR, overcomes its resiest energy, and that it fails to save against. It drifts towards the ground for 3 rounds as the party unleashes their full power upon it. With 1 hp remaining the dragon takes its full movement speed and flys as far away as it can. The party gathers together and using Luscian’s last teleport they all appear in range for one last attack, Cathal hits it with 2 arrows, Teneb Strikes it with Ravager, Oberyn and Luscian both hit it with spells…… and the Ancient Red Dragon falls to the ground dead.

The most powerful red dragon in the land, the greatest threat in the north, the mightiest foe yet confronted by the party has been defeated.

Yet the party’s celebratory mood is shattered as it view the full might of the remaining dragon and boar tribes marching upon their army, only several hours away.

With no time to regain new spells or for their allies to heal, the party must defend against the rest of the Dragon tribes army, along with its Fire Giant allies, 2 dragon riders, and its powerful half Dragon Chieftain.

Boar tribe main village was invaded:

After attacking some of the outlying villages and gaining the support of some hill giants, the party and its allied armies attack the Main village of the boar tribe. They blast through the defenses with magic and brute force, pushing the defenders back who retreat into a system of caves built into the mountainside. The party has their armies stand guard and subdue the remaining Boar Villagers while they venture into the tunnels. They are ambushed twice but quickly manage to overcome the boar tribe soldiers, through not unscathed. They eventually make their way into a strange room, where the dimensions seems wrong, the walls are covered in worked and unworked stone in random patterns, and pieces of metal plate stick out at odd angles. The party began exploring the room, finding an extrememely durable door in front of them. Suddenly a boar tribe warrior ran up from behind into the room and triggered a switch that shut down a large iron portcullis, trapping them in the room. They dispatched him through the bars with spells and arrows, but someone behind him cast a wall of stone blocking their line of sight. Then they heard the sounds of gears clicking and a pannel in the wall pulled up, allowing lava and poisonous fumes to start flowing into the room. The party quickly cast protection from fire on everyone and Luscian began using cold spells to halt the flow of the lava while everyone else tried to bust down the door. Eventually after several solid hits by Teneb and a disintegrate from Lucian the door finally gave out. And the party stepped out of the frying pan and into the fire, as many experienced Boar tribe spearmen along with a powerful shamen and mage using anti-magic field met them as they passed through the door. Teneb and Oberyn took many hits from the enemies, Oberyn used magic causing the spearmen to lose their grips on any weapons striking him, and Teneb just shrugging off the blows and wading into melee with the cleric. Luscian is attacked from behind through a trap door by another spearmen. Cathal gets into the room also taking many hits and fires upon the mage. After several rounds of viscous fighting the cleric and a few remaining combatants used magic to escape. The Main village of the boar tribe has been conquered.

After liberating their villages and defeating the Boar tribe in the region the Hill Giants and Frost Giants firmly join the party’s cause on the condition that most of this territory become theirs and the humans leave them alone, with a small caveat for trade.

Day 81: The Pressure is On
The Pressure is On

The party began feeling the pressure of time grinding them towards their fate. They make hasty plans with High Lord Reinn and High Jarl Thord to begin an invasion of Two Rivers Hold with the forces present at Black Moutain with support coming from Red Valley Hold. The party is preparing to leave for Sestrus to work on the diplomatic crisis between the Covaris Clan and the Renostrii. Suddenly shifter scouts interupt the meeting and tell the party they have encounted a group of ~50 Lerwein soldiers and two OoTBW leaders about a days travel from Black Mountain Hold. After defeating the soldiers they discovered a cave that the soldiers had been guarding and inside were some strange looking dark skinned humans in metal armor with a yellow sun symbol. The party recognizes the description of Paladins and Clerics of Adanos, and assumes it must be the group sent to investigate the reports of undead in Beranok. They quickly travel down to the cave and begin a dialogue with the clerics who go from being hostile to friendly. Luscian stays outside, not wishing to be around the clerics and their enslaved spellcaster. Teneb did most of the talking, with Cathal, Reinn, and Oberyn chiming in as needed.
They Paladins and Clerics introduce themselves, tell of their travels and of being attacked by first werewolves and then several fierce battles with Lerwein soldiers led by undead, spellcasters, and evil warriors. The party agrees to transport them all to Sestrus in Mal’tara so they can revive their brethren, currently preserved with gentle repose, and then further discuss the undead situation.

After they teleport to Sestrus Illrania M’nere is summoned and quickly sees the fallen servants of Adanos raised from the dead, healed, and mostly restored from their ordeal. Afterwards Mazin speaks to the party and they trade information about the current situation between the Renostrsii and the Covaris Clan. He informs them that Raul’zil will back the Renostrii if it comes to a war, relishing the chance to take over Sanctus and split Mal’tara. The Renostrii would likely swear vassalage to the Emperor and that would give Raul’zil a great position to isolate the She’sua from the rest of the continent, strangling their ability to trade. In the process it would also gain them land, trade, and soldiers. The most troubling part, is that because of the Undead problem in Lerwein and Beranok, is that the Order of the Sun, the military arm of the church of Adanos, will assuredly take part in the conflict. They will see conquering the Covaris Clan to gain Sanctus as a staging ground as a required step in attempting to wipe out the Undead and followers of Nerak and Tergura in Lerwein and Beranok.

The party reassess their options and become much more convinced a diplomatic solution is necessary. Raul’zil has over ~10,000 soliders and the Order of the Sun has ~1000 Paladins and ~100 clerics they could send as well. After doing some diplomatic work, picking up items in the city, selling and some other odds and ends the party decides to go meetup with the Shifters and the Tatood tribe and try to strike the Devil tribe a few times before the peace talks the next day.

The party Teleports twice, being careful to miss any unknown regions in case of lingering teleport traps, and arrives withing a few miles of the warcamp. They approach and are led to the camp by scouts. They talk with the two barbarians they rescued from being werewolves, and meet the other leaders of the tribe. After assessing the situation, they have the bulk of the Tatoo army go to retake their mountain village, and take ~50 barbarians and ~70 shifters with them to attack the ~500 devil tribe army fortified and tunneling outside the entrance to the Dwarvern Halls.

Devil Tribe Fight

-Shifters heal their injured, and are joined in the morning by another ~70, bringing their total number to ~150.
-Scouts sent to Bear Tribe, who had been attacked and pushed back by the Devil Tribe. (their trading village outside the Dwarvern tunnels was taken and is being used by the Devil Tribe currently).

Day 78-80: The Defeat of the Red Terror
The Defeat of the Red Terror

Amid the chaos of the werewolf invasion of the Shifter forests the party sets out with their new allies to track down the Red Terror. The Shifter leaders Ra’lo and Sha’ra, along with their two scout patrols fan out looking for clues to lead the group to their goal. After a few hours of patrolling a great disturbance is detected a few hundred feet ahead of the party. The ground shakes, the trees rustle, the howles of werewolves erupt throughout the forrest…. and then Teneb comes charging in on the back of his Tyrannosaurus Mount.

Lusican exclaims “What are you doing here? How did you find us?”

“Nevermind that. Its right behind me” screams Teneb over the roars. “We have to hold off its minions until it shows up then kill it before were overwhelmed.”

The party fans out in a defensive formation and Luscian, Kurin, and Oberyn cast last second buffs on the party. Haste, protection from acid, greater invisibility, and greater heroism are quickly cast. Hurin starts humming a reinforcing ditto as well.

“Everyone protect Kurin so he can use the flute!!” Luscian yells redundantly, as battle plans have already been discussed in great detail.

As the roars get louder, the party braces themselves and at the last second Luscian puts up a wall of fire so all the charging werewolves run through it. The first two waves of burning monsters are quickly dispatched by by Oberyn, now a powerful dinosaur, his Tiger, Teneb mounted on his Trex, and an invisible Cathal standing in the front. Oberyn also summoned another Tyrannosaurus to hold the front line.

The next few waves proved more challenging, as more powerful monsters attacked the party. Even a few werewolf spell-casters began to attack. Luscian had one of his fireballs blocked by a wall of stone cast by a powerful werewolf who seemed to be issuing orders to the rest. In response Oberyn reinforced Luscians wall of fire with a wall of thorns to give the party a better defensive line.

The werewolves surged around both sides of the walls, giving the party a few rounds to regroup. They formed to lines of defense to each side of Kurin and dug in. The werewolves attacked primarily from the east, sending in wave after wave of weaker monsters. Teneb stood in front backed by his Trex and the wave broke around him. The shifters and luscian picking off those that got by him. On the other front Oberyn and his minions, with Cathal standing atop the trex picked off the stronger werewolves attacking from the other side. Two in particular gave them a hard time, one a larger armored beast with a large crystal sword, the other a thick scarred creature who cackles and casts spells. While they were busy trading blows and spells with these two, the Red Terror arrived.

Within moments it dispatched two of shifters and drove back the defensive line. Cathal and Overyn drew back to help against the true threat, giving their previous enemies time to heal and recover. Kurin took out the flute and begain playing. Teneb ran out in front with Bardiche braced and set against the Red Terror as it charged Kurin. Teneb managed to sink the entire head of his weapon into its chest, but as he pulled it out red acidic ooze covered the wound and it healed. The Red terror tore into Teneb who stood his ground, some blows glancing off his armor, some slicing open his flesh. For nearly 30 seconds Teneb held his ground against this fearsome foe, his magic barely holding his body together. During this time Oberyn and Cathal screened Kurin from the west, and Luscian and Tenebs Trex screened him from the east, with the shifters in showering arrows into any incoming werewolf.

And just like that… it was over. A wave of powerful magic erupted from the flute, a pure note sounding throughout the Forrest. And the Red Terror… stopped. It strained against what seemed to be an invisible cage but could not move. Its minions also all stopped moving, appearing trapped as well.

As the battle came to an abrupt halt, the party and its allies convened around the Red Terror. Luscian moved around it testing its ‘cage’. Then on inspiration, touched the flute in Kurin’s hands, and was able to put his other hand through the field. The party tried blasting the red terror with spells to little noticeable effect. They tried using both magic and weapons on the collar, also to no effect. After some deliberation, the party decided to remove the collar from the red terror by beheading it, then try to destroy it.

After they had slain the Red Terror and picked up the Collar, the other werwolves all collapse to the ground convulsing. Over the coarse of few minutes they began to revert to their human forms.

The two who had given the party so much trouble turned about to be members of the ‘scarred’ barbarian tribe. Garog skullbreaker, a powerful barbarian and Dunar Rockskin a scarred witchdoctor. They thanked the party profusely for helping to free them, and after the party looted the corpses of the dead, they followed them back towards the temple.

The party returns to the temple to sounds of celebration and laughter, as the shifters rejoice in the victory over the great invader and its minions and the return of their lost kin. The party asks that they help round up all of the humans as well, with Cathal adding a request to search for High Jarl Reinn. Kr’al the warleader from the root tribe walks up to Cathal and bows, apologizing for his earlier behavior and takes personal responsibility for finding Reinn and any other important humans and bringing them back.

Oberyn feels a strange compulsion, and on a whim takes the collar and walks up the steps of the ruined temple. Cathal, curious of his companion, follows as well. Both suddenly disappear from sight. Teneb and Luscian make to follow but as Teneb reaches the stairs he is suddenly struck with a bolt of lightning and knocked backwards 20ft to land on his ass. Luscian stops with his foot almost touching the steps, his gaze going between Teneb and the stairs, and mutters “fuck that,” putting his foot back on the ground.

(Cathal and Oberyn). As you step into the old ruins you become dizzy and disoriented. When you regain your balance you are startled to see your surroundings have changed. The temple ruins have been replaced by a grand monument, framed by silver trees with brilliant emerald leaves. A statue rose marble depicting a beautiful young women stands before you. She is cloaked is leaves of every hue, crowned with thorny roses, and around her feet are arrayed an assortment of lifelike animals depicted in semiprecious stones. As you both approach, in awe of the Majesty of the shrine, you are filled with the knowledge that this is Liandra, goddess of the forests. As you move closer you notice the statue of a red wolf by her left side, carved of carnelian and grimacing as if raging or in pain. You see faint scratch marks around its neck, as if someone had pried something from it. The collar clicks open in Oberyn’s hand, and after but a moment of hesitation he puts it around the neck of the wolf. The scratches seal, and the bearing of the wolf changes to grace and a state of readiness. Even though you see no change, you feel as if the statue is smiling at you. Cathal turns around and is shocked to find a previously empty slab of stone now holds the most beautiful object he has ever seen. A mithril longbow, with a golden string, curving silver blades extending from the top and botton sits hovering a few inches from the stone. He reverently picks it up, and as he does so both he and Oberyn are suddenly back in the ruins.

The shifters fall silent one by one as they notice what Cathal is carrying, and almost as one they drop to their knees. Many voices murmer in reverent tones “the contract is renewed”. Many of the leaders slowly approach you, and embrace you one by one, tears in their eyes. After a few minutes a haggard armored figure approaches, long beard obscuring his face, dirt and mud covering his body, a large adamantine greatsword slung over his back. Despite the changes the last few months of monstrous servitude have wrought, Cathal would recognize his liege anywhere, and the two rush together and embrace. Reinn thanks his friend profusely for freeing him and the others.

Amid the celebrations, Reinn, some freed humans including the two Tatood barbarians, the party, and some of the Shifter leaders hold a quick war conference. They exchange information and decide to lead the survivors back to Black Mountain Hold which takes two days. Kurin is teleported back to Sanctus. High Jarl Thord welcomes the party, the returned people of Beranok, and the Shifters to his lands. He also pledges his fealty to Reinn as the new High Lord of Beranok and agrees to fight against Avis and Lerwein. Reinn rallies many of the recovered werewolves to follow him into battle to retake Beranok. Cathal asks the Shifters to accompany Reinn as well to retake Two Rivers Hold.

Mal’tara: Covaris Clan and the Renostrii are at each others throats, the peace summit is set for tmrw afternoon.

Barbarian Lands: The Dragon Tribe and the Boar tribe have marched their troops to attack the Wolf tribe and remnants of the Serpent tribe. They are severally outnumbered and outmatched and won’t last the week.

Dwarven City: The Dwarves are hemmed in by an undead army in the south near Red Valley Hold and the Devil Tribe in the north. Their status is unknown but likely dire.

Two Rivers Hold: Avis and the remnants of his besieging army have retreated to Two Rivers hold to like their wounds and regroup. Thord and Reinn with their 3 armies and Shifter allies are heading to retake the area from Avis. They will arrive in about a week but skirmishes will begin taking place in a few days.

Day 72 -77: Recovery and Expansion
Recovery and Expansion

The highly successful night raid upon Avis’s siege camp has nearly ended the direct threat to Red Valley Hold from his army. With over 450 of their 910 soldiers dead and many more wounded, and the loss of their head cleric, two OotBW Magus’s, and an OotBW Antipaladin there is not much they can do but bunker down and recover.

This gives both the forces of Red Valley Hold and the Party time to recover themselves and deal with other pressing threats.

Brogar DragonForger heads off to the Wolf Tribe’s valley to meet up with Mavka and his Serpent Tribe allies, and to begin the final preparations to defend against the armies of the Dragon and Boar tribes.

Teneb sneaks into Skytower hold to check on his Orphanage, Business ventures, and Cohort/Followers.

Cathal and Luscian travel to Black Mountain Hold, to meet with High Jarl Thord StoneShield on behalf of Njal and beseech his aid. On the trip they encounter Oberyn, a powerful druid of L’iandra and together with him and some Black Mountain Rangers they drive back a large pack of the Red Terror’s werewolves. This earns them the goodwill of Thord who agrees to some preliminary terms of an alliance. Luscian establishes a Covaris Clan trading post to bring food and sell merchandise, allowing them to circumvent the need for river trade.

Cathal, Luscian, and Oberyn all travel to Sestrus to sell loot, purchase new magic items, and recover for a few days. Oberyn makes contact with the local clergy of Li’andra and helps them with healing. He also spends some time crafting magic weapons. Luscian makes contact with some leaders of the Covaris Clan and learns of an escalation in the problems between the family and the Renostrii Noble House. He also spends time disenchanting magic items and beginning to add power to his own magic items. Cathal hunts through the city looking for information, people, and clues to the whereabouts of the magic flute. He has an encounter with Sorila, the Oracle of Theth that he and Luscian fought a week before.
The entire party receives an invitation from Ilrania M’nere to come dine with her at King Marius’ palace.

They head to the palace armed and expecting a fight or at least strenuous negotiation, and are instead shocked to be seated for dinner along with all the High Oracles of Mal’tara. Karth, the young roguish male High Oracle of the temple of Fire. Xers, the serious middle aged male High Oracle of the temple of Earth. Morinth, the kind middle aged female High Oracle of the temple of Water. Lena, the sarcastic young High Oracle of the temple of Air. Caira, the spirited young female High Oracle of the temple of Nature. Katrine M’nere, the reserved young female High Oracle of the temple of Life. And of course Ilrania M’nere, the Head Oracle of Mal’tara and adviser to the King. The party starts by asking a few questions and trying to nudge information out of their hosts by offering snipets themselves. Ilrania M’nere quickly ends this by telling them almost everything they have been doing in the last few months along with the impacts of those actions.

She further shares the background of your enemies Archmage Drasko and Duke Darrell, some of her own history with them, and a large extent of their plotting. She revealed that they are servants of the evil Gods Nerak and Tegura, both of whom ascended during the Great Mages war many centuries ago. How these two gods were banished from the world by Theth , Lor , and Li’andra who also ascended during the great mages war. Drasko and Darrell were behind the Barbarian Horde’s attacks on northern Fleid, weakening their ‘ruler’ and his ally as well as setting the stage for an ‘alliance’ with Beranok. She revealed the The political maneuvering to make Avis a High Jarl of the new territory granted to Beranok , the attack upon the dwarvern ambassadors to sow distrust and force High Lord Kurdis into taking an unpopular stance. The attack by the Red Terror to kill Kurdis and sow fear, but which instead removed his son High Jarl Reinn. The ascension of Avis to the position of High Lord of all Beranok with the support (bribes) of the High Jarls of Lake Town Hold and Two Rivers Hold. The werewolf army raised from all those infected by the Red Terror and his minions, controlled by Li’et using a artifact flute from the mages war. The undead army raised from many of those killed during the barbarian horde’s invasion and the attacks by the Red Terror. And how the purpose of all of this was to gain soldiers and position to attack both the Dwarves and the Shifters, to kill their people and seize their temples, greatly weakening both Li’andra and Theth and setting the stage for Nerak and Tegura to openly return. There is also a plot to start a war between the Covaris Clan and the Renostrii, which hopefully will weaken and divide Mal’tara. Furthermore it will likely spark conflict between Raul’zil and She’sua as they become involved supporting the conflict of their allies in Mal’tara. This will allows Lerwein to conquer the rest of Fleid without interference and they can then turn to the rest at leisure.

The Oracles are doing what they can to boolster the power of Theth and Liandra in case the temples do fall, and to counter some of these plots. But they must work carefully and not attract attention too early, which is why they wish to support the party. Ilrania M’nere gives the party the flute, shows them how to activate a compass that points towards the artifact collar the red terror wears, and informs them they need a powerful bard or someone else with 13+ ranks in perform wind instruments to properly use it to control the red terror.

The party teleports to Sanctus to get the aid of Kurin, an old and well respected bard, teacher, and former leader of the Covaris Clan. With Kurin in tow, and a large cache of silver weapons, they then attempt to Travel through Plants deep into the shifter forests. This goes rather badly as the party hits an area protected by a Persistent Teleport Trap, and are shunted into an ancient prison/dungeon left over from the mages war. They are trapped in a stone room surrounded by walls of force, with a magical orb spewing powerful spells at them every round, and a Prismatic Wall covering an adamantine door. Lusican disintegrates the wall of force protecting the orb, and over several rounds Cathal manages to deactivate the orb while the rest of the party buffs against, heals from, and dispels the Orbs attacks. After that they tkae down the Prismatic Wall layer by layer, then open the Adamantine door. They enter another room and are attampting to open its door, when they are attacked by two Clockwork Golems. Quick thinking, much dodging, and Oberyns terrifying magically buffed Dire Tiger Animal companion get the party through the encounter without any losses. In the next two rooms they find a great deal of interesting leftovers from the Mages War, including the controls for the trapped room, some old equipment, and several magical items.

After escaping the dungeon the party wanders the woods until in encounters a patrol of shifters from the Raven Tribe. They recognize the tokens of friendship Cathal and Luscian carry, and Sha’ra the patrol leader recognizes Oberyn as well. They convince her to take them to the Temple where the shifters are defending against the Red Terror and its Minioins.(The Red Invader / The invaders). Luscian and Cathal are blindfolded, Oberyn is not, as they are led to the shifter leaders. They are introduced to:

Ti’an (Ranger 11), Warleader of the Lake Tribe (temple guardians)

Kr’all wishes them executed, but Overyn manages to make a good case. Sha’ra and also Ra’lo (the old patrol leader who gave them the friendship tokens months back) vouch for them, and with the gifted silver weapons and past help as fulcrums, Kurin manages to eloquently convince them all to let them help you destroy the red terror. The party heads into the woods with ~10 shifters armed with the silver weapons they brought. ( 8x ranger 9’s, along with Sh’ara (ranger 10) and Ra’lo (ranger 10).

The party managed to defend Red Valley Hold against the soldiers of Lerwein led by the OotBW mages and their summoned allies. Ding your all level 13

-from discussions no one wanted to keep anything, so its all headed to sale. OotBW equipment with insignia/embossing sells for 1/5 normal value, everything else at 1/2, then modified by best appriase/diplomacy checks and +10% trait for luscian as normal. Before rolls its worth ~69k once sold which will take at least a week maybe more depending on where you sell it :)

Red Wall Fort was also attacked at the same time as the 4 groups of enemies that teleported into Red Valley Hold by the army camped outside its gates led by High Lord Avis. The fighting was fierce and deadly, the Fort barely managed to hold back the tide of Beranok and Lerwein troops, with their siege weapons and spell-casters, until reinforcements arrived from Red Valley Hold (~100 troops + Brogar + Teneb + Cathal). The troops let their comrades rest and heal and the three heroes stepped into the breach and took the brunt of the assault.
